Evaluation of nursing students about the degree of basic knowledge of the english language

RESUMO

Objetivo: avaliar o grau de conhecimento básico da língua inglesa entre discentes de Enfermagem do Centro Universitário UNA, em Belo Horizonte/MG. Metodologia: pesquisa de campo, de natureza quantitativa realizada com 252 discentes. A coleta de dados ocorreu de Março à Abril de 2014. Utilizou-se questionário semi-estruturado para delinear o perfil, qualificação e auto-avaliação, além de um teste do grau de conhecimento básico. Resultados: a comparação estatística entre os alunos mostrou diferenças significativas em relação à instituição que estudaram no ensino fundamental/médio (p<0,001) e quanto ao fato de terem feito curso de inglês (p<0,001). Conclusão: o desempenho dos alunos é insatisfatório para considerá-los como detentores do conhecimento acerca do idioma no nível básico, visto que a maior parte dos pesquisados não alcançaram a média proposta. ABSTRACT

Objective: to evaluate the degree of basic knowledge of the English language among nursing students of UNA University Center, in Belo Horizonte/MG. Methods: field research, of a quantitative nature performed with 252 students. Data were collected from March to April 2014. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to delineate the profile, qualification and self-assessment, as well as a basic knowledge test. Results: the statistical comparison among the students showed significant differences in relation to the institution studied in elementary / middle school (p <0.001) and the fact that they studied English (p <0.001). Conclusion: the performance of the students is unsatisfactory to consider them as holders of knowledge about the language at the basic level, since the majority of those surveyed did not reach the proposed average.
